Purposeful & Accessible Assessment
Assessment at Longwill begins with the curriculum. Teachers check whether pupils have learned the intended knowledge and skills and use this information to plan next steps.
Assessment is proportionate, purposeful and accessible, and no single score is used to define a pupil or lower future expectations.
Different Ways to Demonstrate Learning
Where appropriate, pupils are assessed against EYFS and National Curriculum expectations. Teachers recognise that a Deaf pupil may understand a concept before they can express it fully in written or spoken English.
Evidence of learning can therefore include BSL explanation, practical application, demonstration, structured observation and work completed with agreed access arrangements.
Assessment information supports teaching, EHCP reviews, transition planning and communication with families. Parents and carers receive clear information about achievements, progress and next steps.
Specialist Assessments At Longwill School, we use a range of specialist language assessments designed specifically for Deaf children to measure productive and receptive language.
Assessments are carefully selected to reflect each child’s individual communication needs, language profile and stage of development.
They help us identify strengths, determine areas where further support may be needed and track each child’s language progress throughout their time at Longwill.
